Day 1, Coffee Lodge, Arusha

View from our front door. It's a jungle out there.

Best brand ever!
But what does it do?

Ready for anything, outside Coffee Lodge.

Day 2, Lake Manyara

Setting out from Coffee Lodge, Arusha.

How many Masai can you fit into the back of a truck?

Tanzania by road.

So, where is Lake Manyara, you ask?

Almost a cool photo...bump.

The first four-legged animal we saw, a terrified dik-dik.
It is probably the most photgraphed dik-dik ever.
We were like paparazzi in a feeding frenzy.

"Dik-dik over here!"

"Dik-dik what are you wearing?"

"Hey Dik-dik..."

Our first real game.

Little did we know zebras are the cows of Africa. There's millions.

Lunchtime.

Bless you.

You can never know hippos, without the smell.

I'll try the pit latrine.

Boys home from school. They're waving because they want us to stop and give them pens.

Base camp. Tloma Mountain Lodge.

Day 3, Ngorongoro Caldera

Looking down 1,200 meters as the fog burns off the rim of the caldera.

"I found my souvenir."

A secret photo of Masai boys walking up the road.
They don't go to school, but stand near the entrance to the caldera and charge for photos.

Who's that guy?

Sniffing you, sniffing me.

Hyena camouflage.

It's good to be the king.

I wonder what the elephants think of the silly humans.

Grinding up the south face of the caldera.

Wind, speed, and dirt.

Red road, green valley.

Burning our way home.

Remembering that my seatbelt does not work.

Back to our $300 a night logde.

Day 4, Leaving Ngorongoro for Tarangire

Morning again. More dust and road.

Behind me is the best coffee in Tanzania. Fact.

Nearly everyone walks, except the pale faces in Landrovers.

"No! No! No!" The child is upset that I didn't pay to take the picture as we passed.

Tarangire, home of the tsetse fly. Where's my deet...?

Tarangire river, before the rains.

Rock Hyrax, they're related to elephants if you can belive it.

Digging for water in the sand of the Tarangire. The elephants know not to drink from the river.

The coolest lizard, ever.

Sunset view from the pool, where I met a cast off from Survivor Outback. How weird.

Day 5, Leaving Tarangire

Leaving the Sopa Lodge, bright and early.
A Masai giraffe, not happy to have breakfast disturbed by the paparazzi (us).

Vanity

A terminate mound, complete with elephant dent (they use them as pillows).

Can you see the lion? If not, you're on the menu.

Off camera are a group of zebras, looking nervous.

A young male, bleeding near the eye. We watched him fight for a higher place in the pack.

Baby elephants, /sigh.

Its not a Safari unless the truck breaks.

Back in business!

The road to the airport, and a 27 hour trip back home.
